Summary:
In the future of Chicago, survivors were divided into five factions: Abnegation, for the selfless. Amity, for the peaceful. Candor, for the honest. Dauntless, for the brave. and Erudite, for the intellectual. Each year, all sixteen year old teenagers must join the choosing ceremony to choose where faction we want to join for our entire life. Those who do not complete initiation into their new faction become "Factionless", and are forced to live in poverty on the streets of the city.
Beatrice Prior, sixteen year old girl is born into an Abnegation family. She doesn't feel like she belongs in Abnegation, because she doesn't see herself as naturally selfless. Her aptitude test shows that she was right, it shows different three factions: Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless. It makes her a 'Divergent’ and warn to never share this information. Beatrice confused to stay in Abnegation with her parents, or change to a different faction. On Choosing Day, Beatrice decides to leave Abnegation and join Dauntless, her brother, Caleb, chooses Erudite.
The Dauntless instructor, Four, explains that not all Dauntless initiates will be allowed to enter the faction: only the top ten will stay, the rest will become factionless. During her initiation, Beatrice renames herself Tris and befriends several other transfer initiates, Christina, Al, and Will. She also befriends some Dauntless-born initiates, including Uriah, Lynn, and Marlene. Initiation into Dauntless is in three stages. The first involves learning how to handle guns and knives and duel with the other initiates. Altought being weaker than most of her fellow initiates, Tris finishes it by beating Molly. After a long struggle, Tris successfully join in dauntless faction.
After her test, all of Dauntless members, is injected with a new serum that no one tells her what for. After that, the ceremony begins, the final rankings are posted, and Tris discovers she has been ranked first. In the midddle of celebrating, she suddenly realizes that the Erudite will use the serum to force Dauntless members to carry out their plans of attacking Abnegation.
During the night after the ceremony, the serum doing a simulation and all of the Dauntless become sleep walking soldiers to attack the Abnegation faction. The serum doesn’t work on Tris or Four because they are both Divergent. After arriving at the Abnegation, Tris and Tobias try to break away escape. But, they are caught and brought to Jeanine, the Erudite leader. Jeanine injects Four with an experimental serum, which makes the Divergent become controlled. Jeanine directs Tobias to sends Tris to death. Tris wakes up sealed inside a glass tank that fills up with water, but her mother breaks the tank and rescues her. After they escape, her mother reveals that she is also Divergent, but while helping Tris escape, she is shot and killed.
She finds her father, Caleb, and Marcus in the safe house, and they resolve to go to the Dauntless compound to find the source of the simulation. Fighting their way through Dauntless headquarters, Tris father sacrifices himself to clear the way for Tris to reach the control room. When she faces the mind controlled Tobias, he attacks Tris. In the fight, Tris realizes she can’t kill him, and choose to surrender, tris’ action helping Tobias to break through the special serum effect. Freed, Tobias helps Tris shut down the Erudite simulation and free the remaining Dauntless from the mind control.
Moral value : From this book I can learn to not to give up like Tris, who was weaker than other initiates but still have the spirit and always cheer up herself that she can get over this, and later at the end she can join with Dauntless faction and don’t become factionless. And the other, what I learn for this book are the divergent, in story were Four and Tris, with all of Tris family always care and help each other. They didn’t scare to sacrifice their self for other family member.
